Labiaplasty

Labiaplasty, also referred to as labioplasty, is a plastic surgery procedure that is the most commonly performed aesthetic gynaecology procedure to improve the appearance of female sexual organs.

The external part of the female genital tract consists of larger and smaller anatomical structures. These include the major and minor labia, the anterior and posterior labia majora, the labial frenulum, the pubic fossa, the clitoris, the clitoral foreskin, the clitoral frenulum and the vaginal vestibule. The main role of the major labia is to protect the vaginal entrance from infection. They are also responsible for maintaining adequate bacterial flora and moisture, and protecting the delicate area from mechanical trauma.

The major labia are divided into greater and lesser labia majora. Larger labia – the outer ones, are made of fatty tissue, so they cushion any trauma, for example during sexual intercourse. The smaller labia, on the other hand, protect the internal structures of the sexual system.

Many patients, struggling with asymmetrical or too large labia, opt for labiaplasty, which allows them to correct the shape of the labia and get rid of the discomfort felt on a daily basis, including inflammation, swelling and painful abrasions. This procedure allows the surgeon specialist to reduce the major or minor labia, improving the patient’s comfort.

Labiaplasty is a safe procedure that eliminates asymmetry and remodels the shape of the labia, improving a woman’s appearance, well-being and self – confidence.

Labiaplasty involves removing excess tissue within the labia minora and correcting existing asymmetry.

A specialized surgeon performs labioplasty under local anesthesia, or under general anesthesia, either surgically (using a scalpel) or by laser (using a laser beam). Laser labioplasty is a modern alternative to surgery, and reduces the risk of post-surgical scarring. Depending on the particular case and the method chosen, labioplasty can take between 60 and 150 minutes, and is a safe procedure with a low risk of post-surgical complications.

The operation is usually performed under local anesthesia. It is not a complicated surgery and usually lasts about 60 – 90 minutes. Preparation for the procedure and the procedure itself are performed in one day, thanks to which patients do not remain in the hospital ward.

Please inform your doctor about all medications you are taking and complaints during your medical consultation. All required tests should be performed as prescribed by the physician prior to surgery. It is very important to stop smoking and drinking alcohol before surgery because these substances have a significant negative effect on wound healing. We recommend giving up alcohol and cigarettes for as long as possible before and after the procedure to avoid postoperative scars. You should stay on empty stomach for 6 hours before the procedure.

The recovery period is 4-6 weeks. It is very important to have control consultations with a doctor. Hygiene of intimate places is very crucial. During the first weeks after the surgery, avoid physical exertion or heavy lifting, as well as sauna visits, bathing and sunbathing. It is also worth giving up drinking and smoking nicotine-containing products as long as possible. This is important because of the proper healing of wounds after surgery and reducing the likelihood of scars.

Absolute contraindications include some gynecological diseases, especially cancer, and in this case you should immediately inform your doctor. Patients who are pregnant or during menstruation are also disqualified from the procedure.

People struggling with comorbidities or other health problems must inform their physician during the first qualification consultation. Before the procedure, perform all tests as prescribed by the doctor and follow all recommendations before and after the procedure.
