Orthodontics

Orthodontics deals with the prevention and treatment of malocclusion and maxillofacial defects in children, adolescents and adults with the help of orthodontic appliances. The therapy is carried out by a specialist orthodontist and affects not only the proper interdental relations, but also the proportions of the lower and middle sections of the face. The causes of these defects are usually birth defects, improper healing of teeth in childhood or specific behaviour shaping the teeth. They can also arise as a result of injury. The goal of orthodontic treatment is to correct the resulting defects so as to provide patients with a healthy dental system and correct bite. This is important not only because of the straight teeth guaranteeing a nice smile but above all it provides a healthy bite and eliminates maxillofacial defects that can affect the rest of our body.

    Healthy teeth

Not many people realise how dental and occlusion defects have a huge impact on the rest of our body. Maintaining proper hygiene and oral health is necessary to maintain the health of the whole body. That is why orthodontic treatment is a very important part of caring for good health. Occlusion defects make it difficult to maintain proper hygiene, patients are at risk of tooth loss due to poor hygiene and as a result of tooth decay and periodontal disease.

    Healthy occlusion

The state of health of the teeth themselves is not the only important aspect. In addition, malocclusion affects the masseter muscles, which can cause headache, temporomandibular joint dysfunction, as well as neck, shoulder and back pain. We may not even be aware that dental defects so negatively affect other parts of the body. To prevent these diseases, it is worth starting orthodontic treatment.

    Healthy smile

Teeth that are crooked or in the wrong place can have an adverse effect on the appearance of the patient’s teeth. Such a cosmetic defect, even if it does not have a bad effect on the patient’s overall health, can have a negative effect on mental health due to depressed mood or lack of self-confidence. Adverse appearance of the teeth can then be compensated by orthodontic treatment. After straightening the teeth, patients are more satisfied with their appearance and therefore smile more often and are happier.

    Step-by-step orthodontic treatment process:

    1. Consultation with a specialist, diagnostics based on modern x-ray diagnostics. Preparation of 3D diagnostic models, thanks to which it is possible to establish a treatment plan tailored to the individual needs of the patient.
    2. Braces assembly. During assembly, the brackets are glued to the teeth, and then the wire is inserted into the braces, which is replaced during subsequent follow-up visits. The patient also receives detailed instructions on how to properly care for the apparatus and oral hygiene during the treatment process.
    3. Regular check-ups. The effectiveness and length of treatment depends largely on the patient’s timeliness. Therefore, at each meeting, the doctor informs when to visit the next visit – they take place at an interval of 4 to 12 weeks, depending on the type of the defect, as well as the progress of treatment.
    4. Dismantling the braces – end of treatment. After the treatment process, hygienisation is recommended, and after a few months whitening.
