A correctly formed nasal septum should run along the axis of the nose. As a result of a congenital or acquired deformity (an abnormality of cartilage tissue), the septum overlaps one of the nasal cavities – as a consequence, a curved septum obstructs airflow. The obstruction caused by severe deformation of the septum leads to chronic sinus disease and is the cause of sleep apnea.
