Nose and septal surgery

Septoplasty, or surgery for nasal septum deviation, can be performed using various techniques. The procedure is performed under general anesthesia and lasts from 30 to 60 minutes. The procedure consists in incising the nasal vestibule and then detaching the mucosa from the cartilage. Depending on the curvature, the cartilage is corrected intranasally (without removing it) or the deformed cartilage is removed. Next, the removed cartilage is properly prepared and replaced in its previous place. Sometimes it is also required to remove the deviated bony parts of the nasal septum or to perform plasty of the hypertrophied turbinates.

After the surgery, sutures are applied to stabilize and keep the septum in the correct position. Finally, dressings are applied to both nasal passages.

Before the procedure, the patient must be healthy. Necessary examinations and specialist consultations should be performed. Before the procedure, we give medications to reduce bleeding. If the patient suffers from chronic diseases, consultations of appropriate specialists (cardiologist, endocrinologist, neurologist, etc.) are required. Before the procedure, an anesthetic consultation is performed in order to qualify for general anesthesia.

Length of stay in hospital: 1 to a maximum of 3 days. The procedure is performed as a one-day surgery. The patient is admitted to the ward in the morning and discharged in the afternoon. If necessary, the patient may be kept under observation for the following days. After the procedure, analgesics and anti-haemorrhagics should be administered for several days. It is recommended to limit physical activity for a week. The dressings are removed from the nose after 2-3 days.

Any side effects, such as bleeding from the nose and mouth, increased body temperature or other, should be consulted immediately with your doctor.
