What is a tubal ligation reversal?

A tubal ligation reversal is a surgical procedure that aims to reverse a previous surgery where a woman’s fallopian tubes were blocked, sealed off or cut in order to avoid pregnancy (also commonly called ”getting your tubes tied”). With this procedure, the tubes are reconnected so that eggs and sperm can move again through the tubes.

How is tubal ligation reversal performed?

At KCM Clinic, tubal ligation reversal is performed with a minimally invasive surgical procedure called laparoscopic tubal reversal. The procedure involves repairing and reconnecting the fallopian tubes using small, specially-designed instruments.

You will be placed under general anaesthesia so you will sleep during the entire procedure. The surgeon will then pump a special gas into your abdomen to create enough space to perform the operation safely and precisely. Then, a laparoscope is inserted so that the surgeon can inspect your pelvis, abdomen, and fallopian tubes. With the help of surgical instruments, the surgeon will then remove the occlusion and prepare the two segments of the tube to be reconnected. Once the tubes are connected again, the surgeon will inject a blue dye through the cervix, the uterus and tubes to make sure that the connection is working well.

How long does tubal ligation reversal take?

A tubal ligation reversal typically takes 2 to 3 hours to be completed.

Not everyone who had a tubal ligation is a good candidate for a reversal. For example, if there is too little tube left or if it is damaged, the doctor will not recommend the surgery. There are different factors to take into account when considering a tubal ligation reversal, including: your age and body mass index; the type of tubal ligation procedure undergone previously; how long the remaining fallopian tubes are and whether they still work properly; amount of scar tissue in the pelvic area; other fertility factors.

I had a tubal ligation reversal but I can’t get pregnant. Why?

If you had a tubal ligation reversal and you haven’t gotten pregnant after a few months from the procedure, don’t worry. Most pregnancies are achieved from six months to one year after surgery. If the remaining fallopian tubes are healthy and there is no fertility issue, there are good chances of getting pregnant. However, consider that even if the fallopian tubes are open all the way through, it is not guaranteed that they work properly. The fallopian tube has tiny hair-like cells called cilia that help move the fertilised egg into the uterus. There is no way to control the function of the cilia at the time of surgery. If you smoke, consider quitting. Smoking can cause fertility issues as well as decrease the ability of the cilia to work correctly.

How long will you have to stay at the hospital?

Today’s microsurgical techniques allow patients to leave the hospital on the same day (typically two hours after the procedure is done). Some patients may need to stay in the hospital one to three days, depending on individual circumstances. You may need to visit the clinic again to check the treated area and have stitches removed if non-absorbable stitches were used.

When can you try to get pregnant again?

After having undergone a tubal ligation reversal, you should wait two to three months before trying to become pregnant. This time is necessary to ensure that the tubes heal completely. Giving proper time for healing will also decrease the chances of an ectopic pregnancy.

What are the complications or side effects of a tubal ligation reversal?

Just like any type of surgery, tubal ligation reversal may have complications, albeit relatively low. Surgery risks include infection, bleeding or injury to nearby organs, and complications related to anaesthesia. Allergic reactions to medications or surgery material may occur. Most patients do not experience any of these risks and complications. However, make sure you discuss them with your surgeon before surgery.

Specifically related to tubal ligation reversal, you need to consider that there is an increased risk of ectopic pregnancy (a fertilised egg grows outside of the uterus). This happens because scar tissue may form in the tube, keeping the fertilised egg from moving through the tube correctly. Make sure you seek prenatal care as soon as you think you’re pregnant so that you can get proper tests and screenings to ensure your pregnancy is going well.

Will you have pain after a tubal ligation reversal?

If you had no complications during the procedure, you should not experience pain – except some discomfort during the first few days after surgery, which is a normal part of the healing process. Laparoscopy is less invasive than open surgery and only a small area of your pelvis is operated. This is why most patients do not even require to stay overnight at the hospital and can go home the same day. Typically, normal activities can be resumed after 2 days, while some other patients might need a week to rest up. Everyone is different, so besides listening to your doctor’s recommendations, make sure you listen to your body and do only what feels right.
