Many women decide to get a boob job (also known as
breast implant surgery or augmentation mammoplasty) to boost their self-confidence. As a matter of fact, this cosmetic
procedure is one of the most frequently performed surgeries worldwide. Simply put, a boob job involves adjusting the shape and size of your breasts using implants. This procedure can also help women for reconstructive purposes, such as after mastectomy for breast cancer.
Breast implant surgery is typically recommended to women who want to make significant changes in the size and shape of their breasts. The procedure is performed by making an incision in your breasts to insert the implant. These incisions can be subglandular (placed directly behind the breast tissue and in front of the pectoral muscle), or subpectoral (placed underneath the pectoral muscle).
If you’re thinking of getting a boob job, there are a few things you need to consider. We’ve listed the top 7 things you should know before getting a boob job done. For any other questions, get in touch with our specialists anytime. We’re available around the clock and happy to help!
There isn’t just one type of breast implant
There are two main types of breast implants, which we are going to describe below. Always
consult with your doctor to understand what type of breast implant is right for you!
Saline implants
Saline implants consist of a silicone case and are filled with sterile salt water. They are inserted empty into the breasts and then filled. This type of implant is typically recommended to women who are 18 or older and are usually cheaper than silicone implants. One of the advantages of saline implants is that if they rupture and leak, the saline solution will be absorbed by your body without any health risk. However, you might need to undergo surgery to remove the silicone case of the implant. In this case, you can have a new implant placed during the same procedure.
Silicone implants
Silicone implants are pre-filled with silicone gel. Many patients believe that silicone implantsfeel more natural. They are available to women aged 22 or older, or to younger patients in exceptional circumstances for reconstruction purposes. Contrary to saline breast implants, the gel will not be absorbed by your body if the implant leaks, but it won’t pose any health risk. Surgery might be necessary to remove the implant, and you may have a new one inserted during the same procedure
Breast implants are not the only option for breast augmentation
Breast augmentation is often performed using breast implants but you have another option:breast augmentation with fat transfer. During this procedure, the surgeon takes fat from one part of your body (usually your belly or thighs), and injects it into your breasts. The surgeon will inject the fat to augment the size of your breasts as well as enhancing their contours. Breast augmentation with fat transfer is a great option for women who wish to achieve subtle changes in how their breasts look.
There are different breast implant shapes to choose from
Beside choosing the size, many patients are not aware that they can also choose different breast implant shapes. The final choice will largely depend on what you hope to achieve in terms of shape, size, and proportion. Below are the two main shapes for breast implants.
Round breast implants
Round breast implants typically give a rounder overall appearance and are available in a wide range of sizes and widths. They have a half-moon shaped profile and can be filled with both saline or silicone gel.
Teardrop breast implants
Teardrop breast implants, also known as shaped implants, are typically recommended to women who wish to achieve a more natural look. They are considered to be more
anatomical as they are fuller at the bottom and taper upwards.
Choosing the right breast implant size is fundamental
A boob job has a lot to do with size. For this reason, it is important that patients make the right decision when it comes to deciding how bigger their breasts should be. Breast implants that are too small or too big can both lead to dissatisfaction. Implants that are too heavy can also cause complications. Patients should always choose the right implant size according to their body as well as the safest option from a medical point of view. At KCM Clinic, we measure shoulder width, chest height and chest width to assess what breast implant size and shape is right. Patients can estimate during the consultation what results they wish to achieve by wearing a flexible sports bra and try on different implants.
You might need to replace your breast implants at one point
Breast implants might need replacing at one point and this can happen for different reasons:
● If you’re not satisfied with the shape or size of the breast implants you got.
● If you had a breast implant rupture: the risk of implant rupture increases after ten
years from the procedure. It often changes the appearance of the breast and the way
it feels.
● If you had a capsular contracture: this happens when the scar tissue that forms
around the implant after surgery becomes too thick, causing pain. Capsular
contracture is treated by making incisions in the scar tissue so that the tissue can
form again properly.
You need to be in good health to undergo a boob job
Don’t forget that a boob job is a surgical procedure! For this reason, patents should be in good health overall and have realistic expectations.
Full recovery might take a few months
Don’t worry, results after breast implant surgery are immediately visible! However, you might need a few months to recover completely, especially for the scars to be healed. Make sure you always follow the post-op guidelines provided by your doctor to ensure a smooth and healthy recovery.
