Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is used in orthopedics and sports medicine to treat injuries and contusions of soft tissues (muscles and tendons) and joints. As a result, tissue regeneration is accelerated, pain is reduced and the patient recovers faster. In osteoarthritis, PRP is administered intra-articular either alone or in combination with hyaluronic acid to increase therapeutic efficacy by the synergistic action of both methods. After the procedure, the patients experience a reduction in pain. In the case of a significant advancement of degenerative changes in the joints, this method gives the opportunity to improve the functionality of the affected joints and extend their life, for example while waiting for an endoprosthesis, especially when used in conjunction with the transplant of adipose tissue enriched with stem cells. After the procedure, patients experience a significant reduction in pain, which in turn increases the comfort of their life.

Stem cells are involved in building every living organism and can divide infinitely many times, they also have the unique ability to differentiate into other types of cells and self-renew, i.e. replace dead cells with new ones that take over their functions. Thanks to this, with the help of stem cells in orthopedics, we treat all sports injuries and joint damage related to degenerative changes. This innovative method is used to support the healing of broken bones, replenishing articular cartilage defects, treating ailments such as jumper’s knee or chronic Achilles tendonitis. Stem cells are also used in muscle injuries and in overloading or injuring ligaments. The sources of stem cells in an adult human are adipose tissue, bone marrow and peripheral blood.

The most important thing is to see an orthopedist. The specialist, on the basis of the medical examinations and analysis of laboratory results, will decide whether the patient can undergo such therapy. One or more treatments are recommended, with the frequency depending on the patient’s condition and other criteria determined by the doctor.

A few days after the procedure, local pain may occur – painkillers can be used to alleviate the symptoms. Pain is associated with the local reaction to injection in the form of swelling. Patients should lead a sparing lifestyle and avoid overloading the limb. In order to relieve pain, apply cold compresses several times a day for 10 to 20 minutes. Patients who perform non-strenuous, non-physical work can often return to it the next day. Orthopedic checks are necessary.

The therapy does not cause any significant side effects. The only reported side effects are related to the same sensations immediately after the procedure: the possibility of small wounds forming and a mild feeling of discomfort that can last up to several days.
