International LIVE streaming Bariatric Surgery Workshop – 9.04.2022

KCM operates as an educational centre which is a highly recognised hub in the medical arena. Each year we gather a great many high calibre surgeons and specialists who come to KCM from all over the world. We are proud to be able to organise multiple conferences and live workshops in advanced minimally invasive surgery.

The 9th of April 2022 marked another successful bariatric surgery workshop launched by KCM.

The event was opened by Mr Philip Pasler, a clinic vice director and managing executive, who in his speech welcomed all the delegates and made the introductions of notable surgeons and speakers. Mr Pasler also noted the importance of such workshops as a valuable educational experience which contributes significantly to medical progress.

The agenda consisted of:

The partakers’ list embraced 230 of the most established doctors, surgeons and health professionals from every corner of the world.

The workshop included two live surgical broadcasts: One Anastomosis Gastric Bypass and Sleeve Gastrectomy jointly conducted by two surgeons Dr Murat Üstün (MD, PhD) and Prof. Piotr Major (MD, PhD), leading experts in bariatric surgeries.

Dr Murat Üstün (MD, PhD) obtained his qualifications at the Ankara Education and Research Hospital Ege University Faculty of Medicine. He is internationally renowned for his work and surgical experience. He is one of the most sought after doctors in Weight Loss Surgery, practicing for over 23 years. Dr. Üstün advocates that knowledge grows when shared has been continuously providing his colleagues with training on bariatric and metabolic surgeries.

Dr. Üstün has also broken new grounds with his technological practices such as using stapler with iDrive Battery Pack in sleeve gastrectomy, using V-Loc suture in bariatric surgery, performing the first sleeve gastrectomy with the Storz Spies laparoscopy system, and performing three-dimensional laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy and 4k sleeve gastrectomy. Dr.Murat Üstün continues his studies on Obesity and Bariatric Surgery partially in London and partially in Istanbul.

Prof. Piotr Major (MD, PhD) graduated from Medical Department of Collegium Medicum at Jagiellonian University (CMJU). Since then he partnered with II department of surgery at CMJU. Since 2010 he has been specializing in general surgery at the Endoscopic, Metabolic Surgery and Soft Tissue Tumours Clinic of the University Hospital in Krakow. He is the author of numerous scientific papers published in national and international medical journals. In 2014 he received his doctorate.

Prof. Major’s interests are towards minimally invasive surgical techniques and surgical treatment of morbid obesity. In his career he performed over 1600 bariatric procedures (i.e. laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy, gastric bypass, revision procedures) and ca. 1,100 other laparoscopic procedures. His vast experience and flawless quality is confirmed by very low post-surgery infection rate.

Both surgeries were done with precision and performed smoothly. The live streaming surgeries were the lead event where experienced surgeons demonstrated their techniques to an audience of keen peers via a video link. The live surgery allowed the participants to experience the extended advantages of the procedures, but also enabled them to explore possible surgical difficulties.

The workshop provided excellent training opportunities and allowed the audience to view an operation conducted by world-renowned surgeons, while having the ability to interact with them in real time. The participants attributed a significant high learning benefit to the workshop. The live surgery was a learning curve for medical professionals interested in One Anastomosis Gastric Bypass as well as in Sleeve Gastrectomy.

Incorporating new techniques into one’s practice by way of observing a live surgery was a time honoured experience and an educational asset. The benefits of observing Dr Murat and Dr Major, the two skilled mentors, were invaluable. These live surgical performances offered a unique educational experience for colleagues to enhance their surgical skills and disseminate information.

Considering the fact that most of the workshop participants are active surgeons with high caseloads, their impressive feedback on the educational value of the workshop has been of high importance.

Post-surgery various questions were raised by the participants and they were answered thoroughly by Dr Murat and Dr Major, delivering detail and in depth knowledge.

The workshop was a great success for all those involved and it has enhanced the continued work of the Clinic in surgical advance.
