Aftercare program

The programme includes ongoing cooperation with the entire multidisciplinary team.

Each patient operated on in our Obesity Treatment Centre will be able to count on help from a psychologist and a dietician. If the effects of the operation are to be preserved for years, it is necessary to modify the patient’s lifestyle, including a reduction diet to reduce body weight by at least 8-10%, education in terms of proper nutrition and quitting smoking, but also increasing physical activity and therapeutic rehabilitation.

Bariatric surgery is an effective and, above all, permanent procedure. The reduction of excess kilograms facilitates the therapy of existing diseases or even their complete withdrawal, which directly affects the quality of a patient’s life and extends its duration.

It should be remembered that failure to comply with the recommendations of the bariatric team may make it impossible to meet the objectives set. It happens sometimes that a patient achieves the required body weight, and then – making certain dietary mistakes (e.g. notorious snacking) – returns to the same level.

An extremely important aspect of working on changes in eating habits and lifestyle, in general, is co-participation in the so-called support groups, in which the patient has the opportunity to talk with other patients, exchange experiences and gain relevant knowledge from recommended specialists in the field of, among others, physical activity, nutrition or psychology.

Depending on individual health recommendations, tolerance and preferences, the patient after bariatric surgery must adapt to specific guidelines for proper nutrition and physical activity.

The principles of diet relate primarily to the correct composition of products on the plate, their appropriately reduced volume, appropriate quality and the so-called glycemic index. In the diet of a bariatric patient, the main emphasis is placed on providing adequate amounts of protein, as well as vitamins and minerals, which, due to the reduction in the volume of the dish, should be given in the most condensed form possible, and in case of difficulty – taken as supplementation.

What is the diet after bariatric surgery? It is not true that a patient who has undergone bariatric surgery will have to remain on a restrictive, mushy diet for the rest of his life, with no possibility of an occasional sweet treat.

The whole process of expanding the diet and learning proper eating habits should be controlled by a specialist dietician, who will show how to naturally learn certain behaviours. It should be stressed, however, that these are general guidelines and each patient should consult their own diet with a dietician cooperating with the bariatric centre where the patient underwent surgery.
