Preventive mastectomy

Mastectomy is a medical procedure involving the surgical removal of one or both breasts, partially or completely. Mastectomy is usually performed to treat breast cancer. In some cases, people considered to be at high risk for breast cancer have preventive surgery. Alternatively, some people may opt for a wide local excision, also known as a lumpectomy. An operation in which a small volume of breast tissue containing a tumor and the surrounding margin of healthy tissue is removed to preserve the breast.

Not every plastic surgeon is authorized to perform breast surgery. This should be borne in mind when making decisions about undergoing breast surgery. You should also pay attention to the clinic, in particular the conditions, equipment and medical team. Quality and safety are paramount. Before consulting, read the consent to the procedure to discuss any ambiguities related to the procedure. Patients qualified for surgery come to the clinic in the morning on the day of surgery. You should be fasting, without food or drink. Remember to take the test results and medicines that you take permanently. Most often, it is recommended to perform a set of about 15 screening tests, such as morphology, blood clotting and sugar levels, but the plastic surgeon will adjust individually which tests should be performed.

After surgery, the patient should stay in the hospital for 1-2 days. After returning home, it is necessary to wear a special surgical bra for about seven weeks. You should not carry weights and do intense physical exercises for a period of about 8 weeks. Avoid sunlight for six months. The full recovery period can take up to a year.

For safety reasons, the operation plan is determined individually between the patient and the surgeon during the pre-surgery consultation. Goals and expectations must go hand in hand with real possibilities and safety at the highest level.
