Urinary incontinence operations

The most frequently used methods of treating stress urinary incontinence include treatments with the use of synthetic tape – TOT and TVT. Both procedures are very similar to each other, and the main difference is the location of the cuts through which the ends of the tape supporting the urethra are led out.

In the TVT method, cuts are made over the pubic symphysis, while the TOT method involves leading the tapes through incisions in the groin. The procedure itself involves the transvaginal insertion of a thin, tension-free polypropylene tape, which is then fastened in such a way that it supports the urethra well from the vaginal side. The procedure is performed under local or general anesthesia. It is characterized by low invasiveness and very high efficiency.

Preparation for the TOT / TVT procedure depends, among others, on on the patient’s age and the degree of urinary incontinence. In patients of advanced age, hormonal preparation of the vagina may be indicated. Standard treatment includes anti-infective prophylaxis and regulation of bowel movements. Before the TOT procedure, it is also necessary to perform a cytological evaluation of the cervix.

Convalescence after TOT surgery usually takes about 3 months. During this time, the patient should avoid intense physical exertion.

The TOT / TVT treatment is low invasive and very effective. If you have a cold, ask your doctor for cough suppression measures. The operated site heals for about 6 weeks and you should refrain from intercourse during this time so that the wound after the surgery can heal completely. It is worth taking care of the right weight, avoiding constipation, eliminating spicy spices, large amounts of alcohol and coffee from the menu.
